OF LIGHT & SOUND

If you ever find that you have some time between the hours of 2p.m. and midnight (on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday), venture down into Tribeca to Church St, between Franklin and White, where there's a fairly unremarkable building with an inconspicuous black door, unmarked except for its number and a plain white flyer that reads The Dream House. Look for it, accidentally walk past it, and backtrack. Find it, and push buzzer #3. Wait patiently, and you'll be buzzed in, where you'll ascend two flights of stairs (be careful not to slip, there's a lot of slush out there) and enter the Dream House. Where instantly, the deep hum of La Monte Young's soundscape will wash over your body. Let it, and let yourself get lost in the frequencies of blue and magenta light (by visual artist Marian Zazeela).

I've always considered myself to be the kind of person that likes to be in control of their physical consciousness, at least I do now, after years spent as an art student pursuing (and forgive me for the cliche) mind-altering experiences and subversive states of mind. But because of recent experiences, like the Dream House, (and the encouragement of one of my professors to meditate over logos, holding a rock, a natural object, and trying to channel energy and creativity through it), I find that I am, once again, much more inclined to embrace such experiences. Experiences that seduce the senses and places me outside my normal frame of reference to better reflect, relax, focus, create.

Also, I can't believe it's been open since 1993, and I've only just heard of it.
